💡 Our Technical Review in summary
Summary
- Message ID: MC906502 (Updated March 19, 2026).
- Core Update: Microsoft is introducing a feature to ensure that automapped calendars are automatically displayed when a user switches from classic Outlook for Windows to the new Outlook for Windows.
- Roadmap ID: 415168.
- Timeline:
- Targeted Release: Late April 2026 through late May 2026.
- General Availability: Late May 2026 through late June 2026.
Impact
- User Experience: Previously, users transitioning to the new Outlook for Windows had to manually re-add or locate calendars that were automapped in the classic version. This update removes that friction by preserving the visibility of shared calendars linked via automapping.
- Migration Parity: This change brings the new Outlook closer to feature parity with the classic version, specifically regarding how shared mailbox permissions and Exchange automapping function.
- Default Status: This feature is enabled by default. No administrative configuration is required to activate the synchronization of these calendars.
- Support Volume: IT departments may see a decrease in support tickets related to “missing calendars” or shared mailbox visibility issues when users trial or migrate to the new Outlook interface.
Action Required
- Documentation: Review and update internal IT knowledge base articles and “New Outlook” migration guides to reflect that manual re-addition of automapped calendars is no longer required after the rollout dates.
- User Communication: Inform power users or departments that rely heavily on shared mailboxes (e.g., HR, Finance, Admin teams) about this improvement to encourage the adoption of the new Outlook client.
- Help Desk Readiness: Ensure support staff are aware of the revised timeline (completing by June 2026) so they can distinguish between synchronization delays and actual permission issues.
- Technical Verification: No admin action is needed on the Exchange backend; the process relies on existing automapping attributes already present in the user’s Exchange profile.
