Microsoft Message ID: MC1227071 – 2026-02-04 | Files in Outlook for iOS and Android will open in Word, Excel or Powerpoint app on iPad

Microsoft 365 Update

💡 Our Technical Review in summary

#### Summary
Starting in early to mid-February 2026, Microsoft will begin an experiment for Outlook on iPad that changes how Word, Excel, and PowerPoint attachments are handled. Instead of opening these files in the standard Outlook in-app previewer, the files will open directly in their respective standalone apps (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint) if they are installed on the device. This experiment is expected to run through late March 2026, at which point Microsoft will evaluate whether to make this a permanent feature.

#### Impact

  • User Experience: iPad users with Word, Excel, or PowerPoint apps installed will bypass the preview screen and launch directly into the full editing application when opening attachments from Outlook.
  • Device Specificity: This change currently only affects iPad devices. Outlook for iPhone and Android remains unchanged unless otherwise specified in future updates.
  • Fallback Mechanism: If the corresponding Office app is not installed on the iPad, the system will default back to the traditional in-app previewer.
  • Administrative Control: There is currently no administrative configuration or toggle to opt-in or opt-out of this experiment.
  • Consistency: Because this is an experiment, not all users in your tenant may experience this change simultaneously, which may lead to inconsistent support tickets.

#### Action Required

  • Internal Communication: Notify iPad users—particularly those who rely on quick previews for triaging emails—that their workflow may change as files launch full applications.
  • Help Desk Readiness: Brief your IT support staff on this experiment to ensure they can explain the change in behavior to end-users who may be confused by the automatic app switching.
  • Documentation: Update any internal “How-to” guides or mobile device training materials that specifically reference the Outlook in-app previewer for iPad.
  • Monitoring: Follow the Microsoft 365 Message Center for updates in late March 2026 to see if Microsoft decides to transition this from an experiment to a permanent feature.
